Winter survival kits on offer in Barnsley

Have your say

WINTER survival kits are to be handed out in Barnsley to try to avoid deaths caused by people beng too cold in their own homes when the temperatures drop.

The 4,000 packs, paid for by a £206,000 Department of Health grant, include a blanket, gloves, hats, socks, porridge oats, and an alarm to make people aware when a room drops below a certain temperature.

The packs have been put together and will be distributed across the town by a team of volunteers in a scheme organised by Barnsley Council.

Nationally, scores of people die from the cold every year.
