SHEFFIELD Hallam MP and Deputy PM Nick Clegg was caught apparently unaware of cuts to winter fuel payments on a radio phone-in show.
The Lib Dem leader was quizzed by one caller about news the Government is to discontinue an extra top-up payment worth £50-£100 a year to OAPs.
Mr Clegg replied: “Firstly, I wouldn’t believe everything you read, I certainly don’t these days. Secondly, we have increased winter fuel payments.”
A spokesman for the Deputy PM said Mr Clegg would be contacting the caller and radio station to clear up any confusion.
He later said the changes to winter fuel payments were not technically a “cut,” but a decision not to continue what had been intended originally as a temporary measure.
