JOB hunters’ numbers have come up - after plans to redevelop a former Sheffield bingo hall into two shops were revealed.

Plans have been submitted to Sheffield Council for discount retailers Aldi and Home Bargains to move into the empty building off Langsett Road in Hillsborough.

Two additional retail units would also be created under the proposals for the old Mecca Bingo site which have been submitted by Quora Developments.

Around 50 new jobs will be created at the stores.

A spokesman for the company said: “As well as a complete refurbishment and reoccupation of the premises, we are to invest in landscaping improvements and creating better links with the surrounding area.

“The introduction of a modern foodstore and free shoppers’ car park will benefit the area, adding to choice and competition, and will ensure immediate investment to prevent further deterioration of the site, which is currently derelict and falling into disrepair.”

“The proposals will also provide significant job opportunities.”

Quora is asking for residents to send them their views about the scheme and comment to the council during the planning process.

Comment forms are being sent to households in the area and Quora is also inviting people to call its freephone information line on 0800 9788968, or email for more information.

Sheffield Council has not yet set a date for consideration of the planning application.
