The Sheffield golfer fired a three over par round on Thursday but recovered superbly to card a four under par round of 68 during a fog-delayed second day.

And he has put himself in contention for a strong finish as he sits just four shots off the top ten.

Willett is now tied for 56th on one under par, nine shots back from leader Andy Sullivan.

Whether he makes the cut is still in doubt as around a third of the field have yet to finish their second rounds due to the delayed start.

The projected cut currently stands at -1 and is unlikely to change drastically.

Fellow Sheffield golfer Matt Fitzpatrick started the day tied for seventh and held steady without making too much progress.

The 21-year-old produced a one under par second round to move to -5 for the tournament, slipping to a tie for ninth in the process.

Tee times for the third round have not been announced with the second round set to be completed on Saturday morning.
