This is why you might have heard a police helicopter above Sheffield city centre last night

Confused residents took to Twitter and Facebook after hearing the helicopter searching the city centre late at night.

The helicopter could be heard hovering over the city centre for around half an hour just before midnight.

Police have now confirmed that they were called to Sheffield city centre after reports of people stealing lead.

Officers checked the roofs over Sheffield city centre following the reports before clearing the area.

The helicopter was also busy in Sheffield on Sunday during a pre-planned operation in Shiregreen.

At around 4.30pm, the helicopter assisted with tactical support for the operation which saw one man arrested.
