Why Jos Luhukay chose to let Ross Wallace leave Sheffield Wednesday

Jos Luhukay has explained for the first time his reasons for not offering Ross Wallace a new Sheffield Wednesday contract.

It was revealed this week that Wallace will be leaving the club after three years at Hillsborough, along with skipper Glenn Loovens and goalkeeper Jake Kean.

The Scottish midfielder - a free transfer from Burnley in 2015 - made 124 appearances for Wednesday, scoring 13 goals but towards the end of this season he picked up a knee injury which required surgery and ended his campaign in February.

With Wallace turning 33 this month, Owls boss Luhukay says that the club 'must look to the future' as he sets about trying to bring down the average age of a very experienced squad.

"Ross is a player who has a lot of experience but we must make a decision for the club and for the future," said Luhukay in his pre-match press briefing ahead of the last match of this season against Norwich City at Hillsborough on Sunday.

"It is not an easy decision, he made in my time very positive performances for me but we have a lot of older players in the team and we must make decisions and sometimes the decisions are hard. It was a difficult decision.

"We know what he can do but we must also look to the future and the future is not for Ross at this age. We must look for players at the age of 18-22,23 so that's why we made the decision."
