Why Joey Pelupessy is pleased with his recent Sheffield Wednesday form

Now Wednesday player Joey Pelupessy is determined to build on his impressive individual performance in Saturday's 2-1 victory at Aston Villa.

The Dutchman, restored to the starting line-up after being dropped to the bench against Nottingham Forest, caught the eye in the centre. His aggressive, combative style of play helped frustrate Villa.

Pelupessy was also neat and tidy on the ball, capping a top display by whipping in a sumptuous cross for Steven Fletcher's matchwinning strike.

"It was my best game of this season," he told The Star. "I felt really good.

"I think I was comfortable on the ball, did my defensive work and helped the team, which is the most important thing. I was happy to get an assist for Steven Fletcher's goal. It was not a bad game for me.

"I think before the international break I played okay and I helped the team.

"Against Stoke, it was not a really good game from myself but it was good on Saturday and I showed my qualities.

"But the most important thing is we played well together as a team. If I can help the team like I did at Villa, then I'm very happy. That is my job."

Jos Luhukay, the Owls boss, said he left Pelupessy out of the first eleven for the trip to Forest due to an ankle injury.

Luhukay said: "Joey had a little bit of a problem on his ankle. He was not 100 per cent which was why he didn't play on Wednesday but you saw at Villa how important he is for the team and the way he brings balance to the team."

Pelupessy had no complaints over starting on the bench last week.

"I was not frustrated to play against Forest," he said. "Of course, as a player, you want to always play but I respect the manager's choices.

"We have a good squad and my ankle was not good so another player was given the chance to play. We have a lot of good players on the bench so you have to accept it."

For Pelupessy, the key now is to build on his positive Villa showing.

He said: "This is still my first year in English football so there are going to be ups and downs but I want to try and produce the level I showed at Aston Villa in every game. That's the most important thing.

"We have a lot of good players so if I'm not playing well then we have got other good players on the bench who can come in. I have to always show my qualities but I'm doing my best every week, every game."

Second half strikes from Marco Matias and Fletcher helped Wednesday see off Steve Bruce's side and secure a fourth victory in their last six matches.

Pelupessy said: "It was a really good performance. Maybe one of the best games this season.

"We controlled the game. Everybody wanted the ball and our movement was good.

"It was difficult for Villa to put pressure on us. We played very well and created a lot of chances. They made it 1-1, scoring a beautiful goal, but we deserved the win."
