The Street Food Chef, which began six years ago as an event caterer, has moved into a unit on Glossop Road, close to Sheffield University and the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

The new shop – formerly a Greggs bakery – adds to the firm’s Mexican canteen on Arundel Street and burrito bar on Pinstone Street. Abi Golland, who runs the company with husband Richard, said it was a ‘great location’.

“It’s bang opposite the hospital and university with a lot of people walking past. We’re feeling pretty positive.”

Street Food Chef’s five-year plan has always been to open a string of shops in Sheffield, said Abi, ever since they took up the offer of installing a mobile kitchen in a derelict building on Pinstone Street, instead of using street pitches.

Other cities are in their sights, she added. “Leeds, Manchester and Nottingham already have burrito bars and are big, thriving cities with healthy city centres. We know who our customers are – professionals and students at lunchtime, and people in the evening who want to pick up something tasty and quick to eat. There’s been a massive rise in Mexican food being sold.”

Richard said: “Our aim has always been to run four or five shops in Sheffield. We want to build a strong business model with a recognisable brand before we start to look outside the city.”

Street Food Chef employs 42 staff. The menu features burritos, tacos and quesadillas, made in front of customers. Opening hours on Glossop Road will be 10am to 10pm, seven days. Seating is available.
