The 22-year-old Manchester United academy graduate is wanted at Bramall Lane as Chris Wilder bolsters his attacking options.

A right-footed striker, Fletcher joined West Ham after leaving United's academy before making a reported £6.5million switch to Boro a year later.

Fletcher spent the second half of last season on loan with Sunderland and has scored 26 goals in 116 career appearances.

The general verdict among Boro fans is that Fletcher has not pushed on as expected after a good loan spell with Barnsley in 2016, but he could fit United's style of play well. 

Others said Chris Wilder's guidance during a loan spell could help Fletcher unlock his potential as a pacy and strong forward and could be a better alternative to injury-prone Scott Hogan.

If United are to bring any of their remaining targets in on loan, they will need the selling clubs to recruit replacements as both Middlesbrough and Aston Villa are said to be reluctant to let the players go otherwise.
