Bolsover District Council and North East Derbyshire District Council want people to “take pride in their community” by identifying which areas have the most litter then get in touch with them to find out how they can support local communities in undertaking local litter picking events.

And as well as loaning equipment, such as high visibility vests, litter picking tongs and rubbish bags, the councils will also pick up the litter collected.

Councillor Michael Gordon, North East Derbyshire District Council’s cabinet member with responsibility for the environment, said, “Our street cleansing and enforcement staff work hard all year round to ke sure our district is a lovely, clean place to live, but there are always areas that are prone to litter or fly tipping.

“That’s why we are encouraging community groups, schools or individuals to get in touch so we can help them tackle any hot spots.

“Just tell us what you are doing, when and where and we can arrange to get the right equipment sent out to you.”

A national campaign was launched last year, to clean up Britain in time for the Queen’s 90th birthday in April 2016.

And although the official clean-up weekend has now passed, the councils are hoping residents will carry on the good work by cleaning up their communities - with their help.

Councillor Brian Murray-Carr, Bolsover District Council’s cabinet member for the environment, said, “We spend an awful lot of time and effort in making our streets and countryside neat and tidy but we can’t be everywhere at once.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for communities to join together to make our towns and villages cleaner places to live and I’d encourage as many individuals, community groups and organisations as possible to take part.”
