Wheels to show Sheffield's mining history

Plans by Sheffield Council to install two coal mining '˜winding wheel' monuments in Beighton are recommended for approval.

The monuments - which appear as half of a winding wheel, mounted on a low wall - are to be placed on the north side of Woodhouse Lane, between the junction of the A57 and Robin Lane, and next to Westfield School near the junction of Eckington Way and Owlthorpe Greenway.

At a meeting on Tuesday, councillors will be told by planning officers that permission was granted several years ago for two wheels in different locations.

However, the wheels were not installed, and have remained in storage ever since.

The presence of such structures is common in towns and cities with a heritage in coal mining across the country, officers say.
