CHILDREN from a South Yorkshire school put their thinking caps on and came up with the name for a new street of homes.

Youngsters from Kelford School, Kimberworth, were invited to christen the road by South Yorkshire Housing Association, which is working with Rotherham Council to build 31 new homes.

SYHA decided to hold a renaming competition for the development, initially named Shrewsbury Terrace, inviting entries from local young people at Kelford School.

After an assortment of suggestions, the name Chiberworde Avenue was selected.

Chiberworde was the original name for Kimberworth in the Doomsday Book of 1086 and SYHA said the name was a fitting acknowledgement.

Dee Hiley, SYHA development officer, said they were delighted with the name, adding: “The young people from Kelford School will be able to look back in years to come and remember the day they put their stamp on the area’s history.”
