Wettest March in years for Sheffield

Last month was the wettest March Sheffield has seen in the last eight years.

Data collected at Weston Park Museum’s weather station showed that there was a deluge of 88.2mm of rainfall across the month.

The downpours were the most rain Sheffield has had in March seen since 2008, where there was 98.8mm of rain. The average rainfall in March is 68mm.

Sheffield also had the most ‘wetter days’ in March since 2008. These are days with more than 5mm of rainfall. There were six of these last month and six of them in March 2008.

Alistair McLean, who records weather data at the museum, said: “There have been periods of intense rainfall rather than just consistent wet weather and cloudbursts of more than 5mm of rain. This is something we’ve seen a lot more of in the last 30 years, compared to the last 100 years.”

Alistair said that other than heavy rainfall the month had been ‘fairly normal’.

The highest temperature was a warm 13.6 degrees celcius while the lowest was -2.0C as snow and ice swept across the city at the beginning of the month.
