Weird World: Strange stories from around the globe

Have your say

one-line wonder: King of the one-liners Tim Vine has picked up the award for the year’s funniest joke at the Loaded Laftas comedy awards.

He saw off competition from acts including Jimmy Carr and magician Paul Daniels, winning with his gag: “ - that’s a site for sore eyes.”

The event, held at the Cuckoo Club in London’s West End, also saw awards given to big names including Alan Carr, Rob Brydon and Dom Joly.

humble pie: Fast food giant McDonald’s has scrapped an advert that said eating one of their products was less risky than petting a stray pit bull, shaving your head, naming your son Sue or giving friends your Facebook password.

The radio advert for Chicken McBites only ran for a few days in the Kansas City area before the complaints started. A campaign against it circulated on social media sites, and the apology was delivered the same way.

barred bart: Iran has banned dolls of the Simpsons cartoon characters, who join Barbie and others on a toy blacklist.

The ban is intended to avoid the promotion of Western culture. A spokesman would not say exactly what was wrong with the Simpsons, but he said dolls on which genitals are distinguishable, as well as dolls of adults, are banned.
