Weekly Sheffield bin cash fund snubbed

JUST 17 councils with weekly bin collections are applying for support from a £250 million Government fund to protect the service - a move Lib Dem members say Sheffield Council should follow.

Opposition Lib Dems called on ruling Labour councillors in Sheffield to apply to the fund for cash to help cover the cost of continuing a weekly service, but ruling Labour councillors decided not to make an application because results would not be known until September - too late to plan this year’s budget.

The Government also told Sheffield Council it would have to commit to keeping weekly bin collections for five years when money from the national fund, created by Communities Secretary Eric Pickles, might not cover the cost of one year’s collections.

Sheffield Council said reducing bin collections from weekly to fortnightly will save £2.4 million a year.
