All of Sheffield is subject to the warning, which also affects Rotherham, Barnsley and central and south Doncaster.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “Isolated intense thunderstorms could bring disruption to a few places.”

They added: “Whilst many areas will miss them and remain hot and sunny, isolated thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and into the evening.

“These could bring frequent lightning, large hail, gusty winds and the potential for 30 mm of rain in less than an hour.”

Their forecast for South Yorkshire suggests showers are more likely between 2pm and 6pm.

“By the afternoon some patchy cloud will develop, and there is a low risk of isolated showers in the afternoon,” the Met Office states.
