The updated forecast comes after it was warned yesterday that temperatures would plummet after this week bringing sub-zero conditions and ice and snow.

Now the predictions are for snow on three days, starting on Thursday (December 12) and continuing into the weekend.

It is likely to be slightly warmer that was predicted yesterday, however, with lows of 1C and highs of 5C during the period where snow could fall.

The reason for the plummeting temperatures is an Arctic blast, bringing harsh winter conditions to much of the UK, with the north and Scotland being hit the hardest.

Come Sunday (December 15) rain showers are predicted. Forecasters have warned of potentially dangerous icy conditions that could come as a result of freezing wet weather.

Sheffield Council’s gritting scheme is in full swing now, with 24 gritters on standby at all hours of the day.
