Weather warning as gale-force winds are set to batter South Yorkshire at the weekend

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind, which applies from 6pm on Saturday (February 8) until midnight on Monday (February 10), as another storm is on the cards.

Gusts of 50-60mph are predicted to hit the UK, including Sheffield and Doncaster, and wind speeds as high as 80mph could batter coastal and hilly areas.

The forecaster predicts just a small chance of injury or death by debris such as tiles falling from buildings, or debris causing traffic accidents.

However, the weather is likely to cause travel disruption in South Yorkshire. Exposed areas such as Tinsley Viaduct could be affected, with its closure being decided by Highways England closer to the time.

Large and high-sided vehicles will have to take extra care when driving in the strong winds, and speed limits of motorways may be reduced.

If you intend to travel this weekend, it is advised that you plan ahead and follow any travel advice that is issued by the relevant authorities.

Remember to give vulnerable road users including cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians more room than usual.

Use main roads, where you are less likely to be exposed to fallen branches and debris.
