Travel warning issued for Sheffield Wednesday fans tonight as snow and ice set to impact journey

South Yorkshire Police have issued a warning to Sheffield Wednesday fans travelling to Wigan for their Sky Bet Championship match tonight (28 January).

Around 1600 Wednesdayites will make the journey to Greater Manchester this evening to see if Gary Monk’s side can make up ground on the play-offs.

But with Met Office weather warnings for ice in place, police have urged away fans to be careful on the “hazardous” roads.

Like South Yorkshire, Greater Manchester has also seen snow overnight, with ice on the Snake Pass reportedly causing “treacherous driving conditions”.

Drivers travelling on the A57 Snake Pass said they were forced to turn back due to the state of the roads.

The route remains open however conditions are said to be worsening between Ladybower Reservoir and Hurst Road.

Temperatures in parts of the UK plummeted to -6C overnight as snow and black ice hit parts of the country. Single figure temperatures are also expected nationwide until Thursday.
