THUNDER WARNING: Sheffield could be hit by FOUR DAYS of lightning, torrential rain and hail

Sounding a yellow weather warning across South Yorkshire and the East Midlands, forecasters say we can now expect to be battered by frequent lightning, torrential downpours, gusty winds and even ‘large, damaging’ hail well into this week.

Residents are urged to be on the alert as the storms could cause flooding, powercuts, and damage to buildings in some areas.

Motorists should be poised for ‘dangerous’ driving conditions and there could be delays to bus and rail services.

It comes after the region basked in a scorching heatwave last week and over the weekend, with temperatures soaring above 30°C in some locations.

The warning launches at 4pm this afternoon (Monday, August 10) and will remain in place until Thursday.

According to the Met Office, the warnings mean: "There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes and large hail.

"There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost

"There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life.”

The warning states: "Some places are likely to see severe thunderstorms on Monday - but there is significant uncertainty in location and timing."
