It’s expected to sweep over the city at around 3pm this afternoon.

The Met Office has launched a ‘yellow’ weather warning over the ‘nasty’ storm, which could cause flooding, power cuts and travel disruption.

It comes after Sheffield residents basked in blazing sunshine this week. Yesterday, the city recorded soaring temperatures of 29°C- as hot as Cyprus.

According to forecasters, that’s all about to change and the storm will rage over the city for around an hour.

Although this will give way to sunny spells this evening, it won’t stop there- thunderstorms are set to return to the city on Saturday from around 4pm until 6pm after a day of torrential rain.

Alex Deakin, Met Office forecaster, said it would remain ‘rather sticky and humid’.

“We are now starting to see thunderstorms developing, and there’s going to be more of them through the course of Friday,” he said.

“Thunderstorms are hit and miss- but if you catch one, you are going to catch very heavy rain and torrential downpours.

“Large hailstones are possible along with lightning and thunder, of course.”
