Storm Dennis: Road closures, powercuts, shut stations and suspended services and floods in South Yorkshire as bad weather continues

Hundreds of homes and businesses remain without power and Rotherham Railway Station is shut due to flooding as Storm Dennis takes hold of South Yorkshire.

Northern Powergrid say there are hundreds of homes across Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham all with out power due to the effects of Storm Dennis.

We are told engineers are working hard to try and restore power by lunch time, although some properties have had no electricity since 7.30pm last night.

A Northern spokesperson said: “Due to heavy rain flooding the railway at Rotherham Central all lines are blocked. Train services running through this station will be cancelled. Disruption is expected until the end of the day.”

For those with trian tickets a road replacement transport will be provided calling at Swinton (South Yorkshire) Rotherham and Meadowhall and visa versa. They will depart at 9am at Meadowhall and Swinton (South Yorkshire) and will depart on the hour and half past the hour there after.

For those thinking about some shopping at Meadowhall, be aware that due to high water levels the park and ride service has been suspended.

A Stagecoach Supertram spokesperson said: "Due to very high water levels on the River Don at Tinsley we are unable to run a service to Meadowhall Park and Ride. All services will terminate at Tinsley Meadowhall South until further notice. Tram train services are currently suspended.

“Ticket acceptance by First and Stagecoach bus in the area affected by Tram Train service cancellation has been agreed.

“The flooding is also causing the River Don levels to rise significantly. This image from similar flooding in November shows why at such times, we aren’t able operate over the bridge at Tinsley until levels subside and the bridge can be checked to ensure no damage has been caused.”

For First bus passengers waiting for the 52a please note Beaverhill is closed due to flooding near to the fire station and 52a will have to use Retford road to access Woodhouse station in both directions but picking up from Ballifield on the inbound journeys.

On the M1 South Yorkshire - one lane closed on M1 southbound from J35, A629 (Rotherham) to J34, A631 (Meadowhall), because of flooding says Highways England.

A spokesperson for Barnsley Council said: "Due to flooding Ben Bank Road is closed, between Dodworth and Silkstone.

“Please drive with care, taking note of the flood signs across the borough.”

Information from Travel South Yorks added: “Meadowhall Drive has been closed due to flooding service x1 will divert around Meadowhall to Weedon street then picking up normal route in both directions.”

The A57 Snake Pass is open but there have been reports of a small landslide blocking the eastbound carriageway somewhere near the summit and there is flooding at various locations, including at Ashopton Viaduct. The wind speed is 57mph but is open to high-sided vehicles unlike A628 Woodhead Pass and the A616 Stocksbridge is closed completly.
