Storm Ciara: Storm will be worst to hit city since Doris two years ago

Storm Ciara will barrel into the UK in just a few day’s time, bringing with it gale-force winds and heavy rain.

The Met Office say the storm poses a threat to life and have issued a yellow ‘be prepared’ warning for most of the country.

The storm is forecast to arrive in Sheffield on Sunday morning, bringing very strong winds and potentially some disruption to travel throughout the day.

Weather experts say injuries and danger to life from flying debris are possible.

They also say there may be some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, and roads and bridges may be forced to close.

Power cuts may also occur, they say, which could potentially affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage.

Almost exactly two years ago, Storm Doris caused similar devastation across the UK, killing three people and causing a flight to crash land.

The storm also brought snow and rain, disrupting road, rail and air travel and interrupting power supplies.

In Sheffield, Doris brought eight hours of gales to the city, flooding several major roads and bringing the tram network to a halt.

Flooding took place on roads across the city including Main Road in Darnall, the Stocksbridge bypass, Parkway Drive, Ecclesall Road South, Eastwood Road in Sharrow, Fife Street in Wincobank and Savage Lane in Dore.

High winds also damaged buildings and brought down trees, although nobody in the county was seriously injured.

And bizarrely, a naked man was seen running down Pond Street at the height of the storm, leaving weather-battered Sheffielders scratching their heads in bemusement.

As it crossed the UK, the storm developed into a rare and dangerous type of event known as a ‘weather bomb’, where pressure drops rapidly and winds increase even further.

There is no indication as yet that Storm Ciara may develop as Doris did, however.
