Snow causes car crashes and chaos on Sheffield road as council admits it was NOT gritted
A car skidded and crashed into a tree and two other motorists collided during the school run on a busy Sheffield road.
Both accidents happened on Darwin Lane, close to Tapton School, at around 8.20am on Tuesday following ‘heavy” snow in Crosspool.
Police were called to assist the motorists involved, with no injuries reported.
Streets Ahead – who oversee highway maintenance in the city on behalf of Sheffield City Council – confirmed the road, which one parent described as “steep and awkward”, had not been gritted prior to the accident.
A spokesperson told The Star schools were not a first priority gritting route and, as temperatures were not expected to drop below freezing in the area overnight, the road was not serviced.
A gritter has since been sent to the area of the crashes and Streets Ahead confirmed all the Council’s gritters will be out on the roads from 11am this morning (Tuesday).
