Streets Ahead – who oversee highway maintenance in the city on behalf of Sheffield City Council – confirmed the road, which one parent described as “steep and awkward”, had not been gritted prior to the accident.

A spokesperson told The Star schools were not a first priority gritting route and, as temperatures were not expected to drop below freezing in the area overnight, the road was not serviced.

A gritter has since been sent to the area of the crashes and Streets Ahead confirmed all the Council’s gritters will be out on the roads from 11am this morning (Tuesday).
