Sheffield snow LIVE: Yellow weather warning for ice after overnight freeze likely impacting roads and schools

Which public transport options are operating in Sheffield this afternoon?
There’s been a lot of disruption on Sheffield and South Yorkshire’s roads today as a result of the snow.
Earlier this morning, all trams in Sheffield were suspended, all First Bus South Yorkshire buses were cancelled and all Stagecoach Yorkshire buses were put on hold.
There have been updates as the day as gone on though - here are the services operating as of time of writing (January 5).
Supertram
Update as of 11am - Yellow route has resumed running between Meadowhall-Cathedral and trying to run to Middlewood. Blue not running. A car has reportedly been abandoned on City road which has halted efforts to get services back up and running. Purple remains suspended. Tram Train operating as normal.
Stagecoach Yorkshire
After an attempt to get some services running, but they reportedly only got stuck. All services remain suspended.
First south Yorkshire
Update as of 10:45am: Services in Sheffield will be running a short route due to the snow, and services in Doncaster are running several diversions. Please check here before travelling.

The snow may have ground South Yorkshire’s roads to a halt today - but that hasn’t stopped people getting out and enjoying their Sunday.


Northbound near Barnsley is blocked due to snow and stranded vehicles
The M1 Northbound near Barnsley is blocked due to snow and stranded vehicles.
The motorway is shut at J37 with the A628 Whinby Road (Barnsley/Dodworth).
Multiple vehicles are reportedly stranded and is is difficult for vehicles to pass.
As a result, severe delays of 40 minutes have been reported leading up to J37.


Widespread problems for cars on roads in Sheffield this morning despite gritting overnight
Despite Sheffield City Council’s Streets Ahead team reportedly gritting throughout the night, drivers have reported widespread problems on roads throughout the city today.
The Streets ahead team said it was gritting “around the clock” on priority routes last night, and is now onto ‘Priority 2’ routes above 200m as of this morning.
However, many residents have reported widespread problems.
Jennifer Dunstan caught this video of two cars and an AA van getting into trouble and skidding on East Bank Road early this morning.
Luke Callaghan said he saw numerous vehicles, including this delivery lorry for ASDA, skidding and slipping in Brierley.


Star reader Jack TB said he had to abandon his vehicle while driving back from an overnight shift in Sheffield. while walking, he witnessed this car catching fire, supposedly after seeing it "rev too hard" while caught in snow.


Meanwhile, all First South Yorkshire buses and all Supertram services have been suspended in Sheffield.

All First South Yorkshire services in Sheffield are now suspended due to the snow.ition to this message.
A spokesperson said: “Due to the inclement weather and road conditions, we are unfortunately unable to operate a normal service.
“Please see below a full and comprehensive list of services affected at present.
“Diversions for road works are also in addition to this message. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
These services include the numbers: 8, 8a, 18, 18a, 20, 24, 25, 47, 48, 51, 52a, 56, 73, 75, 75a, 76, 76a, 76e, 80, 81, 82, 83, 86, 95, 95a, 95b, 95s, 97, 98, 115, 116, 120, 120k, 139, 140, 141, 142, 207, 216, 272, J33, MAN4, X1, X2, X3, X5.
ROUND Sheffield Run 20k Charity run CANCELLED
A 20km charity fun run, the ROUND Sheffield Run, has been cancelled.
A text has gone out to participants this morning (January 5) confirming the event is off.
The charity run is an 11-stage race breaking Sheffield up into 1-2km legs taking in the whole of the Steel City.
Power cuts in Rivelin
A number of power cuts have been reported in Rivelin in the S6 6 and S6 5 post codes, off Manchester Road.
It has not yet been reported how many properties have been affected.
Snake Pass and Woodhead Pass are now closed
Probably the least surprising news when it snows, but both the A57 Snake Pass and the A628 Woodhead Pass through the Peak District are now closed due to snow.
Woodhead Pass is closed between Tintwistle and the Flouch Roundabout.
Snake Pass is closed between Ladybower Reservoir and the Royal Oak Inn on Hurst Road.
These Stagecoach buses have been suspended until further notice
Stagecoach Yorkshire says these Sheffield buses have been suspended until further notice: 2, 2A, 57, 88
BREAKING: All Supertram services suspended in Sheffield
Supertram Stagecoach has now suspended all services across its netowrk.
Three lanes closed on M1, severe delays on M1 and M18 in South Yorkshire
A crash has reportedly closed three lanes on the M1 Northbound from J30 A616 (Worksop / Sheffield South) to J31 A57 Worksop Road (Sheffield / Worksop). One lane remains open.
Highway cameras show the motorway is largely empty at time of writing (8:59am) but AA Traffic reports the M1 was already struggling with delays of more than 15 minutes this morning befofe this incident. The impact of the crash on traffic throughout the day is yet to be seen.
South Yorkshire Police has been contacted for a comment.
Delays have also been reported in both directions both on the M1 near Barnsley and on the M18 towards Doncaster.


Blue & Purple Stagecoach Supertram routes suspended
Stagecoach Supertram is cancelling trams and reporting widespread delays this morning.
After earlier asking passengers to “expect delays” as staff were having trouble getting in to work today (January 5), the operator has now suspended both its Blue Route and its Purple Route.
That means there are no trams between Malin Bridge and Halway, or between Cathedral and Herdings Park.
The Yellow route is running but is severely delayed.

Good morning and welcome to a snowy day in South Yorkshire following last night’s flurry.
Enjoy it while you can as rain is forecast for this afternoon that could wash it al away before long.
In the meantime, roads and the M1 don’t appear to be handling it well, and public transport like Stagecoach Supertram are saying to “expect cancellations.”
