Sheffield homeless night shelter opened due to freezing temperatures

A night shelter for homeless people in Sheffield has been opened due to this weekend's anticipated freezing temperatures.

Sheffield Council say due to freezing temperatures forecast for tonight and tomorrow night, Sheffield’s ‘severe weather emergency protocol’ has been activated.

This means people on the streets can apply for emergency accomodation in the city on nights when the temperature fall below a set level.

To be assessed for the service before 5pm, people are asked to call 0114 273 6306.

To be assessed out of hours call 0800 731 1689.

Sheffield doesn’t have a permanent night shelter, despite some calling for one in recent years.

Others, however, believe resources should be directed to getting people off the streets, rather than entrenching the problem.
