A day earlier the normally placid Porter Brook burst its banks after a long period of rain. The cafe was left on an ‘island’ as water flowed past the doors.

The play area and many paths were also inundated, while hours of reseeding work by the Friends of Porter Valley was swept away.

Resident Ted Watterson said the water was the “highest for 48 years.”
