Forecasters had earlier issued a yellow warning for large swathes of northern England and that warning remains in place.
A Met Office spokesman said: “Heavy snow will lead to some disruption during Tuesday morning.
“Travel delays on roads are likely, stranding some vehicles and passengers. Some delays and cancellations to rail and air travel are likely.
“There is a good chance that some rural communities could become cut off. Power cuts are likely and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected
The warning comes into place from 3am Tuesday and lasts until 1pm tomorrow.
Forecasters say snow could spread beyond the boundaries indicated on its forecast charts.
