Hour by hour weather forecast for Sheffield as snow looks set to hit UK over weekend

A Met Office weather warning for snow and ice in Sheffield is in place.

The warning covers the period between 3pm today and midnight tomorrow as cold air emanating from Russia and Eastern Europe moves across the UK.

There are warnings of ‘significant snow accumulations’ in parts of Eastern England and Scotland.

Storm Darcy will see rain falling as snow as temperatures plummet.

There are warnings that the wintry weather could last until Wednesday in some parts.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Paul Gundersen, said: “The UK is in for a notably cold and snowy period over the next week, with very cold air in place over the whole of the UK by Sunday.”

Sheffield is set for a dry morning until around 10am, when the chance of rain increases to 50 per cent.

Between noon and 3pm, there is a 90 per cent chance of rain.

Between 4pm and 8pm, temperatures are set to begin to fall with a strong chance of rain still likely.

Wintry showers are forecast to begin at around 8pm and fall until around 4am tomorrow.

In a second spell of wintry weather, snow is expected between 8am and 11am.

Sunday will see temperatures struggle to get above freezing.

The forecast for the next few days is a 50 per cent chance of snow from 3am on Monday until 3am on Tuesday.

The Met Office said: “Snow showers may lead to disruption to travel in places.

“Some roads and railways are likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services.

“There is a small chance of longer travel delays in places with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel.

“There is a slight chance that some rural communities could become cut off

“There is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected.”

It warned of some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

Sheffield Council said its gritters worked through the night treating priority routes because of forecasts of rain turning to sleet on higher ground.
