Streets Ahead, the Council’s road maintenance provider, confirmed all priority routes in the city will be gritted from 7pm as they urged residents to take extra care on the roads.

It comes as more wintry showers are expected to hit Sheffield tonight. The Met Office has forecast light showers from 8pm until 9pm, then heavy showers between 9pm and 10pm with gusts of 38mph.

The temperature overnight will also feel like -1C, although freezing temperatures are not expected.

A number of flood warnings and alerts are also in place across South Yorkshire after Storm Dennis battered the region over the weekend.

The extreme weather has caused significant travel disruption, including train station closures.
