WEATHER WARNING: Snow and ice warning issued for South Yorkshire tonight

Freezing temperatures and potential snow showers are being forecast for Sheffield and South Yorkshire tonight.

The Met Office has issued a ‘Yellow Warning’ for snow and ice from 6pm tonight, Saturday.

Snow showers are currently forecast for around 9pm tonight.

A spokesman for the Met Office said: “Icy patches are expected to form on untreated surfaces this evening and overnight onwards into Sunday morning, especially where further snow showers occur after dark.

“The public are advised to take extra care and be aware of the potential for some disruption to travel.

“Clear spells after dark will allow temperatures to widely fall below freezing in places leading to the risk of ice on untreated surfaces.”

A separate weather warning has also been issued for South Yorkshire on Monday - when winds of up to 80mph are possible.

The Met Office said gale force winds expected across many northern and central parts of the UK at the start of next week.

A spokesman said: “Gusts of 60-70 mph are likely quite widely, with gusts to around 80 mph possible, particularly in exposed parts of the northwest and perhaps locally to the east of high ground.

“Please be aware of the risk of disruption to transport as well as power supplies.”
