Severe cold weather is forecast for South Yorkshire in the coming days.
The Met Office has issued a cold weather alert as the country is expected to endure colder than average conditions over the weekend, and days either side.
The alert warned: “There is a 90 per cent probability of severe cold weather/icy conditions between Friday and Tuesday in parts of England.
“This weather could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services.”
The Level 3 ‘severe weather action’ alert states that widespread overnight frosts will be the main contributor to low temperatures.
Forecasters say some wintry precipitation can be expected for most areas too, mostly in the form of scattered showers, leading to lying snow and icy stretches in places.
The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for snow and ice in the South Yorkshire area for today and tomorrow, with heavy showers forecast for the region, falling as a mixture of hail, sleet and snow.
The warning reads: “Snow accumulations are likely to mount up on hills, with around 10 to 15cm for some areas above 300m. Smaller accumulations are also expected to lower levels at times with localised falls of 2 to 6cm. Ice will be an additional hazard on untreated surfaces.
“The public should be aware of the risk of disruption to travel.”
Temperatures in Sheffield are expected to plunge to below freezing overnight, with maximum daytime temperatures struggling to rise above 4 degrees over the weekend.
