Sheffield is set to be battered by 60mph gales tonight.
The Met Office has issued a yellow ‘beware’ wether warning for the Sheffield area ahead of a violent storm, which will move eastwards across the north of the country overnight.
The unsettled conditions will include strong gusts of up to 60mph, heavy and persistent rain and possibly hailstones.
Temperatures will remain usually high for the time of year, at around 14 degrees.
Forecasters warned the stormy conditions could cause wind damage and possibly disruption to public transport and power supplies.
While the strong winds and rain should settle for a time, another bout of stormy weather is expected to hit the city tomorrow, which will continue overnight.
The Highways Agency has issued its first amber alert for the new year urging road users to check weather and driving conditions before setting out on journeys.
Drivers of high-sided vehicles and other vulnerable vehicles, such as caravans and motorcycles, are urged to avoid using exposed sections of motorways and other routes across the north while the windy conditions continue.
