It will be a case of woolly hats and scarves for people heading out in Sheffield today with a cold day forecast as the Beast from the East approaches.

The Met Office said initial patchy cloud would soon disperse leading to a clear but cold day, with a brisk southeasterly wind, which produce a noticeable windchill.

Maximum temperatures will be around 5°C before plummeting to around -2°C overnight.

The UK is set for a blast of severe wintry weather next week with Siberian winds expected to bring bone-chilling temperatures and a significant risk of snow.

A huge high pressure weather system - nicknamed the 'Beast from the East' - is building over much of northern Europe and will funnel freezing cold air over the continent.

Temperatures will continue to plummet this weekend and that trend will continue into next week.

The latest Met Office forecast for Sheffield predicts bitterly cold temperatures setting in from Sunday.

When the wind chill is taken into account temperatures will be around -4C on Sunday.
