We still have a way to go

It was great to see the recent articles in the Star about the help offered to disabled people into work but I read it with a tinge of sadness as I used to train and help disabled people into employment some 35 years ago, and though attitudes are improving we still have some way to go.

The present Government says the best way out of poverty is work but until all employers become convinced of the ability of disabled people this isn’t a reality for many. Before retirement in 2015 I worked for a government department and six years ago, I was able through my trade union and hospital specialist to obtain a reasonable adjustment for a disability.

My hope is not that disabled people would be given a chance to work that is demeaning but that employers give disabled people an opportunity to work.
