'We are all heartbroken' - Colleagues left shattered at death of police officer in Sheffield

PC Matt Lannie, aged 40, died when the police motorbike he was riding was involved in a collision with a car on Nether Lane, Ecclesfield, on Tuesday afternoon.

He was responding to report of a car failing to stop for officers when the collision occurred.

PC Lannie was pronounced dead a short time later.

He was a former response officer in Sheffield but then moved into roads policing and was a specialist police motorcyclist.

In a statement released today, his colleagues said: “We lost a much-loved member of our Operational Support Unit family this week - PC Matt Lannie.

“Matt died in the line of duty, doing a job that he loved. We are all heartbroken.

“We have been paying our respects and sharing our condolences with Matt’s family at OSU by writing in his book of condolences.

“As not everyone can do this, a dedicated email address has been set up so that friends, former colleagues and members of the public can send in their messages.

“Thank you to everyone for your messages of support and love, they have offered great comfort to us.”

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision has been launched.

Witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage of the incident or moments leading up to it is urged to come forward.
