Adam Reach’s shot from close range was blocked on the goal line by the elbow of lunging Rams defender Richard Keogh and everyone expected a spot kick to be awarded.

However, for reasons known only to himself, referee James Linington failed to award a penalty and in turn there would be no red card for Keogh.

Wednesday went on to lose the game 2-0 with head coach Carlos Carvalhal admitting the decision cost his side the game.

“It’s a game where after six minutes and 45 seconds there was an unbelievable decision,” he said. “I don’t understand it. It was a red card and a clear penalty. You can see the image. “The referee had a good view. There are four referees on the pitch and the decision was completely the opposite. At that moment, we were playing well and creating chances. We probably could have scored. It would have made a massive difference. The decision of the referee had a big impact on the final score.”

Even Derby boss Steve McClaren admitted his side got away with it.

He said: “Have I got sympathy (for Wednesday)? Absolutely. Games are turned on that one way or another, and it turned our way. What you have to do in those instances is take advantage, and that is what we did.”
