WATCH: Violent brawl breaks out at Doncaster school during HS2 meeting
Police had to be called to a Doncaster school last night after residents queuing to get into a public meeting to discuss the new HS2 route became embroiled in a violent brawl that ended with two men scrapping on the floor.
*****PLEASE NOTE: THE VIDEO USED IN THIS STORY CONTAINS DISTRESSING SCENES*****The scuffle broke out at Barnburgh Primary School last night, as hundreds of residents queued to get into the meeting.
During the altercation one man was pinned against a wall and another man was thrown to the floor.
A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Police were called at around 7pm last night (Monday 1 August) to reports of a disturbance at Barnburgh Primary School in Church Lane. "It was reported that a significant number of people were trying to enter the premises (to attend the meeting) which caused some disruption. "Upon officer arrival, there was a significant number of people at the location but no criminal offences were reported and no arrests were made. "A second meeting was held after the first in order to accommodate the large number of people who attended."
A second meeting had to be held later on that evening to accommodate the high volume of people attempting to attend the meeting.
The new route, which would see a station at Meadowhall scrapped in favour of one at Sheffield City Centre, was announced last month and is set to go through the Shimmer Housing Estate in Mexborough.
And if given the go-ahead, around 200 homes on the partially finished estate could be demolished to make way for the high-speed rail link to the Capital.
The community meeting was not held by HS2 Ltd, but a number of representatives from the company are believed to have attended last night's event.
