The former Watford player's contract now runs until 2020, ending speculation that Forestieri could be on his way out of the club.

The frontman recognised that this has been a difficult season for him referring, himself, to his refusal to travel for the game against Norwich City in August, amid reported interest from other clubs.

Forestieri described that as a 'big mistake' and is now fully focused on maintaining Wednesday's chase for promotion to the Premier League.

He also thanked fans for their support, especially during the festive period in which he missed the game against Preston then performed poorly by his standards against Wolves, again prompting conspiracy theorists to suggest he could be leaving Hillsborough.

During this time, one fan negatively tweeted Forestieri's pregnant wife.

Forestieri told swfc.co.uk: "Thank you for all the support because this season I have had maybe some bad moments, so to them they support me all the time, I want to say 'thank you' and I hope I can do my best on the pitch."

He added: "For me, it is important because, it is old now, I had a big mistake (with the incident at Norwich), everyone knows.

"In New Year I was very disappointed because I did everything to play. At 12 o clock at night I was on the motorway for training the next day, the first of January to try and play. The people don't know this and some fans say 'Nando, maybe he will go, he is not the same'. It's not that, I tried to do my best but I know I played so-so in the first half (against Wolves) but I tried to help the team. My wife is pregnant and some fan puts on twitter a bad thing about her; she tried to help me. For the rest of the support I am so happy because they support me, they showed me that they love me so I want to say thank you to them."

On the announcement his new contract, Forestieri described himself as 'so happy' and says that if Wednesday play as a team, they can replicate the form that they showed last season, where the Owls went through to the Play-Off Final.

"I'm so happy to stay here, now I'll just focus and carry and and play and try to help Sheffield Wednesday."

He added: "(We want to try to do better than we have done the past six months. I think we need to improve a lot of things. We played against Boro and I think it was positive because we played so good. OK, we made two or three mistakes but I think against a Premier League team we did so good, so that is positive for Saturday.

"There are plenty of games. We need to play the same as last season, like a team. If we play like a single player we won't do anything. We just need to play like a team, if we play like a team we will do good things.

"At the start of the season there were a lot of new players, now we know more about each each. We have nice players, but the secret is that we play like a team and fight for the other players. We need to look around the team, run for our team mates, if we do this is we can win against every team in the Championship."
