After three goals in his previous two games from the bench, the Sheffield Wednesday forward was given a start in Saturday's Lancashire derby with Preston North End.

Fresh from doing his parent club a favour by scoring a late equaliser in Fulham in midweek, Joao was buoyant and though he didn't score, he did claim an assist and provided a dizzying piece of incredible footwork that did lead to the ball ending up in the net but Marvin Emnes was ruled offside.

Joao picked up the ball 40 yards out with his back to goal; dragged it back and set off on a mesmerising run. The Portuguese international skipped inside and outside, leaving defender after defender on their backsides before, quite possibly getting a bit of luck, though we'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

His, ahem, pass looped over the top to the awaiting Emnes who turned it in, but the referee's assistant had his flag up for offside.

The match finished 2-2 between the Red Rose rivals and Joao, as he had done in the games against Norwich and Fulham, more than played his part.

Aiden McGeady, on loan at Wednesday last season and on-fire at Preston this year, scored the equaliser for the Lilywhites.
