Ricky Holmes put Charlton in front with a well-taken free kick and Karl Robinson's side struck the bar before the Blades really got going and when Jack O'Connell leveled there was a sense that it was only a matter of time before another would arrive.

Danny Lafferty was the man to provide it and though at times United toiled a little, they were well worth the victory which stretched their lead over third-placed Fleetwood to 10 points.

"We always find a way to win games," said boss Chris Wilder. "I think Charlton have got some good players, but we've got proper players. The players deserve every plaudit that gets chucked their way. We want to be relentless and keep doing what we're doing."
