An own goal from Angus McDonald and a second half strike from the hugely impressive Sam Hutchinson earned the Owls the victory over the unfortunate Reds who had been denied on a number of occasions by Keiren Westwood in the Wednesday goal.

Barnsley also went down to ten men near the end when Adam Hammill when he and Hutchinson went in for a 50-50 ball but, crucially, both of the Barnsley player's feet were off the ground. However confusion reigned as the referee looked like he had sent off Hutchinson, with the Hillsborough scoreboard even putting a red card beside his name.

Eventually Hammill left the pitch and he was followed down the tunnel by Barnsley boss Paul Heckingbottom and Owls assistant coach Lee Bullen after an altercation in the technical area.
