That first strike for the Blades was back in October in a 3-0 win over Shrewsbury and while it has taken almost five months for the next one to arrive, it was well worth the wait.

The Northern Ireland international let fly with a brilliant first-time effort with the outside of his left foot which flew into the top corner and even had Rochdale fans applauding behind the goal.

Mark Duffy had put United ahead after they were awarded an indirect free-kick in the box and then came that stunner from Lafferty.

Steven Davies and Matthew Lund leveled matters for the home side before Billy Sharp looked to have settled United and sent them on their way to three points.

However, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing scored with 12 minutes remaining to give Dale a share of the spoils.

United manager Chris Wilder says errors cost his team all three points at Spotland.

"We've been really consistent in our performances this season and we want to win games of football, but it was individual errors," he said. "They'll look at the goals they've scored as decent goals but from our point of view, we've not stopped crosses and when it has come into our box, we've not defended well enough."
