Carlos Carvalhal wants to extend Gary Hooper's stay at Sheffield Wednesday

Goals either side of half-time from Hooper (2) and Fernando Forestieri ensured Wednesday secured their fourth consecutive Hillsborough win.

Victory extended their unbeaten home run to 12 matches in all competitions and keeps them in seventh position, two points shy of the Championship’s top six.

Hooper, on loan from Norwich City, is due to go back to Carrow Road after Saturday’s Yorkshire derby encounter with Leeds United.

Carvalhal said: “We are trying to organise our house and stay with the players we have. Our chairman is doing fantastic and working on that.

“I know Gary very well since he played at Celtic. He is doing well but I think he can do better in the future.

“He was my first choice when I arrived in England but I can’t comment on contracts because it’s in the hands of the chairman.”

Carvalhal’s men have kicked off 2016 in fine style, winning all three of their fixtures, but were made to work hard by a spirited Bolton outfit.

“I’m very happy about the three points and that was the most important thing,” he said.

“In the first half, Bolton controlled the music of the game. They put on calm music and the team, the fans were listening to the music. We followed the melody of the opponents. We were not happy on the break.

“We tried to put on different music in the second half. We put on a little bit of rock and we opened them up. We took risks and tried to win. With that kind of rock and roll, we could score goals and so could Bolton. We had chances and so did Bolton.”

Meanwhile, Bolton midfielder Mark Davies’ proposed move to Wednesday has hit a stumbling block, with the two parties having failed to agree personal terms. Neil Lennon, the Wanderers boss, says he is unsure if the deal is still on.
