Warning to tax credit claimants

MORE than 100,000 South Yorkshire tax credit claimants have been told to report changes in their circumstances - or risk receiving more money than they should.

HM Revenue and Customs are warning that the money would have to paid back, and might even lead to a financial penalty.

Claimants need to let HMRC know of any changes in their circumstances not already reported during the year, which could include changes to working hours, childcare costs, living arrangements or income.

HMRC’s Director General of Benefits and Credits, Nick Lodge, said: “Many people forget or fail to tell us about important changes – such as having a partner move in or an increase in income – which will affect the money they receive.”
