This was the scene after a major smash on the M1 in Sheffield this afternoon, which prompted a police warning to motorists

Incredibly, no one was seriously injured when an HGV and a black Mercedes car collided on the M1 northbound near Woodall services, between junctions 30 and 31 of the motorway.

But police shared these photos as a valuable warning to other drivers about the dangers of failing to give way when entering a motorway.

"This may have delayed you this afternoon, M1 north near Woodall services," tweeted officers from South Yorkshire Police's Operational Support unit.

"Please remember that entrances to motorways are Give Ways, do not expect approaching traffic to move over for you if they have nowhere to go.
