Warning over cable thefts

Have your say

CABLE thieves are putting people’s lives at risk, police have warned.

Police in Barnsley are becoming increasingly concerned about the theft of cable, which they say can cause serious danger not only to those involved but to innocent people.

Recently in the Bolton-on-Dearne area, thieves stole lengths of earth cable, a low voltage neutral cable and cut the main neutral cable.

As a consequence live electricity is unable to return from houses so it starts to find a current wherever it can – down water pipes or gas pipes which then become live.

Sergeant Phil Jenkins of Wombwell Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “This incident demonstrates the theft of metal from electricity pylons and substations poses a significant risk to those involved and the general public.|
