A warning has been issued over thieves after several people including an 89-year-old woman had their purses stolen in Rotherham.
Police are urging shoppers to be vigilant in the run-up to Christmas after multiple ‘purse dipping’ offences were reported in the town centre in November.
Safer Neighbourhood Inspector Martyn Sheldon said: “We typically see a rise in the number of purse thefts in the town centre during the busy festive shopping period and this year is no exception.
“It seems that elderly members of the public in particular are being targeted, with offenders taking advantage of the crowded shopping centres to steal from vulnerable people.”
Police advised shoppers to keep bags close, zipped up, with purses out of sight. They also advised against leaving bags out in public.
