Doncaster Council and NHS Doncaster have been awarded accreditation by Walking for Health, a Natural England initiative.
Doncaster Walking for Health had to show it met the required criteria to qualify for the status, including offering led walks for beginners, following Walking for Health best practice to ensure walks are run safely and collecting basic monitoring information.
As an accredited scheme, Doncaster Walking for Health will benefit from being seen as part of a nationally evaluated scheme as well as being formally recognised by health professionals, prospective partners and funders.
It comes in the middle of Doncaster Walking Festival 2011 which runs until 27 March. The festival aims to encourage residents to discover places to walk in Doncaster.
Councillor Cynthia Ransome, cabinet member for neighbourhoods and communities, said: “This is good news for our Walking for Health team.”
