A WALKER enjoying a day out in Edale to celebrate his birthday ended up in hospital with a broken leg – after falling down a manhole.
The 49-year-old, from Belper, was walking in the Edale Valley when he fell down a manhole in a field near to the Hollins Cross track.
Members of Buxton and Edale Mountain Rescue Teams Snatch Squad were called to help paramedics move the casualty.
A member of the joint rescue team snatch squad said: “ This chap was extremely unlucky in falling into this manhole, believed to be the only one in this field, especially as he was celebrating his birthday.”
Rescue team volunteers were alerted to the incident at noon on Tuesday.
A total of 18 members were involved in helping the injured walker.
